John Catto left his native Scotland for the new colony of Australia to seek his fortune in 1833. He settled near what would become Bendigo, calling his new home Memsie, after the village whence he came. Catto chose his ground carefully and established vines upon a site of rich clay soils, fortuitously scattered with the perfect measure of limestone. The splendid terroirs which now yield harvests of articulate Bendigo Shiraz, produce a delicious, full flavoured red wine that's perfect for serving alongside your favourite mix of grilled meat and veg.

Water Wheel is situated at Bridgewater -On- Loddon under the shadow of the historic water powered Water Wheel Flour Mill, surrounded by hectares of thriving vines. One of the Bendigo region's most eminent farming dynasties acquired the estate in the late 1980s and embarked on a program of planting vines, installing new facilities, employing a highly skilled winemaking team and introducing a major new oak regimen. The parched, sun exposed vines at Water Wheel are only a slight distance from the shade of giant river gums, which grow along the banks of Loddon River. Sergio Carlei makes wine from the heart, his passion has moved him from the family garage to a fully fledged artisanal winemaking operation. Made from the most intensely flavoured grapes, grown to a parcel of fortunate land, Terra Felix have fashioned their Mourverdre to sensational Rhone styling. Not often seen as a pure varietal wine, fruit is sourced from a small vineyard north of Bendigo, planted to a terroir which is highly akin to the soils and clime of la Vallée du Rhône. Match to European cuisine, braises and bay leaf recipes or wine based soups.

Predominantly from the Seppelt property in the Grampians, a third of the fruit is picked off good vineyards at Bendigo, a further component is sourced from splendid Heathcote sites. An assemblage of Shiraz grown to somewhat different terroirs across the finer viticultural precincts of Victoria, the cooler climes of Grampians contributing a richness of fruit to balance the earthy tannins of warmer aspects to the north. An elegant, peppery wine, with expressions of berries, plum and soft tannins, mellowed by oak and resolving on a long, savoury finish.

Originally crafted by the legendary Colin Preece and labelled as Burgundy, Chalambar has become one of the most highly sought Seppelt releases each year, due to its consistency, quality and value. The House of Seppelt are custodians to one of Australia's most auspicious cellars, constructed by miners who took up viticulture when the Victorian gold ruch was in decline. The Connor Park vineyards were planted by industrialist Tom Connor in the 1960s, with a view to establishing a test site for the development of the automatic grape harvester. It was acquired by the Lougoons in the 1980s, a family of pastoralists who learned quickly about the synergy between grazing and winemaking. A small parcel of closely cosseted Durif vines at Lake Marmal near Bendigo, yields a precious harvest of world class Durif grapes. A powerful, opaque wine with sizeable tannin, countered by a palate of remarkable intensity and profound length.

Two thirds Chardonnay and a third of Pinot Gris from good vineyards at Bendigo, Mt Macedon and Yarra Valley. Parcels are all whole bunch pressed into a mix of fermenters and pre loved oak hogsheads for indigenous yeast vinification. An emulation of the suave, effervescent Pinot styles from Asti and the Veneto, redolent of freshly picked orchard fruit over supple hints of seasoned butterscotch oak. Parcels of Shiraz for this stunning wine are selected from a unique site at the heart of Heathcote appellation. Premium parcels are collated from Marong and from the estate vineyard at Harcourt. Winemaker Adam P. Marks firm belief is that good fruit should be treated gently and with minimal intervention. All blocks are trellised to vertical shoot positioning system, the growers employ a regimen of traditional viticultural techniques, organics and crop thinning to produce small but precious yields of less than 2½ tonnes per acre.

From closely coddled orchards at the heart of Victoria's most splendid apple growing country in Harcourt Valley, Bress have hand crafted a luxurious cider in the Normandy style, tiraged to induce a second fermentation in bottle, employing the same techniques as those used for making Champagne. An accord of superior clones, Sweet Alford and Kingston Black, Bulmers Norman and Somerset Red Streaks, individually basket pressed and separately fermented, ultimately assembled into the unique Bress style and held for an extravagant six years in bottle on sedimentery lees.

The joy of breeding chickens in the Yarra Valley led to France, where an appreciation of the traditional, sustainable land management principles and ancient vinification techniques were the inspiration to establish one of the Bendigo region's most artisanal wineries.

Black Jack was a yankee sailor who jumped ship and joined the Castlemaine goldrush of the1850s. He remains a part of local follore. The McKenzie and Pollock families named their property after the adjacent road which commemorates the legend of Mr. Jack, planting vines on the site of an old apple orchard in the 1980s. Redolent of spice and savoury fruits, sweet and juicy on the palate, filled of plums and ripe dark berries over a backbone of fine, sweet and toasty American oak, opulent and lingering, the defining articulation of Bendigo Shiraz.

Major Thomas Mitchell surveyed the area around Bendigo in 1836, excited about his discovery of bountiful pastorals, initiating a migration of squatters and settlers into the august terroirs of Harcourt Valley. Renowned for its arcadian splendour and largess of orchard fruit, Harcourt is wine country, home to some of the most outstanding Victorian vineyards. Major's Line brings the fruit of Harcourt together with choice Blackjack parcels from Heathcote and Bendigo, plum, allspice and juicy black fruits over a trundle of succulent, toothy tannins.

Orchards flourish and thrive on the unfertile granites of Harcourt Valley. This is wine central for Bendigo's most superior and memorable vintages. The auspicious Blackjack vines are all hand pruned and hand picked, balmy indian summers, cool nights and clear days, permit the grapes to ripen slowly and fully, vintage typically occurs in late April to early May. A sensational and stylish accord of Merlot and Cabernet, somewhat more eloquent, a complex dry red of profound varietal definition and seamless fusion between fruit, tannins and oak.

One of Bendigo's salient marques, a wine of extraordinary personality, built around the prominent tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon, cushioned by the plummy softness from a smaller component of resplendent Merlot. The philosophy at Blackjack is to not interfere with the vinification, in a sense, to let the grapes and vintage do the talking. The overall character is determined by a unique combination of season and environment. A medium weighted, complex dry red with essential varietal definition and seamless fusion between fruit, tannins and oak.

Blackjack has claimed the eminent M.Chapoutier Trophy for Best Shiraz at the prestigious Le Concours des Vinson on no fewer than three occasions. Block 6 is a superior parcel of distinguished vines, renowned within the Bendigo district for producing a very high quality, intensely fruit driven Shiraz. Whilst directly adjacent to the original Blackjack plantings, Block 6 features a unique soil profile and a different clone. Block 6 always displays savoury Rhone structure and style, as opposed to the identifiably Aussie genre of Shiraz produced by Blackjack Vineyard.

Bendigo's Maiden Gully has been producing outstanding and memorable Shiraz wines for over forty years. Balgownie have matched parcels of their most predisposed fruit with harvests of correspondingly amicable Shiraz grapes from splendid vineyards in Victoria's central districts and the Yarra Valley. A singularly generous, effervescent Shiraz wine with chewy tannins, full flavoured palate and engagingly spiced aromas. The Sparkling Shiraz of choice to accompany chocolate cherry desserts, game birds, juicy red meats or pork with rich sauces.

A fusion of Balgownie's splendid Bendigo Shiraz with a component of fruit forward Pinot Noir grown to the estate vineyard in Yarra Valley. Hand picked grapes are lightly pressed, steeped briefly on skins to infuse the wine with a delicate salmon hue and treated to a cool fermentation for the retention of vibrant fresh fruit flavours and bouquet.

Shiraz vines were established at Balgownie Estate in 1969, followed by a second planting in 1974. The carefully selected site near Bendigo has provided excellent conditions throughout four decades, producing impressive reds since the inaugural vintage of 1972. Balgownie is most notable for its deep red colour, vibrant berry fruit aromas, subtle use of oak, velvety textures and fine, lingering tannins. A splendid match to crackling encrusted, succulently roast joint of juicy young pork.

Balgownie Cabernet Sauvignon always attracts attention, displaying the elusive holy grail of exemplary varietal definition with distinctive Bendigo regionality, a tradition which has positioned Balgownie as one of Victoria's most cherished Cabernet wines. Balgownie have established a reputation for being long lived whilst offering the ripeness of fruit to provide immense drinking pleasure on release. All grapes are from estate vines well over twenty five years of age, the earliest planted in 1969, grown to rich Bendigo soils, the secret of Balgownie's success.

The Balgownie experience with Shiraz dates back to 1969, when the original vines were established on a carefully selected site at Maiden Gully near Bendigo. A backbone of local, estate grown Shiraz is vinified alongside components from superior Victorian vineyards. The sturdy tannins and powerful ripe fruit flavours of Bendigo are enhanced by the spiced acidity and lighter plum character of terroirs further afield. A dash of Viognier contributes suppleness, alluring perfumes and a touch of apricot sweetness.
